Cinnamon is pleased to be working with Party Mart in creating this years Halloween banners! From what I gather, Halloween is a BIG DEAL - raking in the most doe of ANY time of the year. Crazy! With this in mind, they are transforming their stores into Halloween Stations... with everything you could possibly imagine for your Halloween party and decor needs.

The signs are at the printers, so within no time Party Mart will be transformed. Watch out for it!

Lilac Offically Opens its Doors!

The day arrived last week and we couldn't be more excited! Lilac officially opened its purple doors and made a very sexy splash in Westboro! Emilia (the owner) has told us a BUNCH of new stock with be arriving very soon and the store will be full of the most mod and beautiful styles (but still affordable!)

In the next couple of weeks I will be getting a photographer in there to show it off. We couldn't be happy with the result and want to share its pretty purple interiors! Just waiting on that new stock... and the chandelier!

Competitor, Collaborator or Inspiration?

We are so thankful to be surrounded by amazing people everyday. We're talking outgoing, bubbly, kind, professional, detailed, funny, creative, and driven - to just name a few. We are lucky to work with inspired people with big dreams and big ideas... and we would like to think we learn from them all.

Every day, I swear is a learning curve, and today... a new one hit us at Cinnamon. We live in a somewhat small city. The kind of city where everyone knows everyone. For businesses (if you are running one that people generally say good things about) this is a great way to grow and to gain referrals, connections and solid peers. Unfortunately, it also means, the odds are you will run into your competition more often than you may like to.

The question is though, what/who is your competition? Are they companies that have clients you want? Are they making more money? Are they creating a better product? Or are they simply in your field?

After thinking this though, I don't think it really is about money. There are pricey companies that deal with large clients, the ones in between and of course, the small guys for individuals or smaller companies. Sure, eventually, a company might build its size from a small business owner to a large corporation, but for instance, a first year fashion graduate's competition is not Christian Dior. In this case, we're talking inspiration and the same goes for graphic designers. There are resources and companies that I visit on a regular basis; they inspire me every day to be a better designer and business owner. So money in many ways is just too subjective.

I also don't think (funny as it may sound) it has very much with being in the same field. As I said above, Christian Dior is not a competitor for the average fashion designer (and rather an inspiration) and just because you do the same thing, doesn't mean you do it the same way (or want to). Of course, it goes the other way as well - if a fashion designer finds that another fashion designer down the street is not creating work that he/she believes lives up to their standard of design, I would think they would also write them off as competition.

So whats that leave us with?

a) they are making a better product/providing better service
b) they are working with clients you want

These two qualities put together are a pretty sure sign of a competitor and someone you may want to have on your radar. Rather then squashing these people, I am finding it is always better to use that energy to make yourself or your product better. What steps do you need to make this happen and how can you make yourself more visible to the clients you want. Or in some cases, can you collaborate with your competition? In the design field in many cases the smartest way to learn and join them in the rankings is by working directly with them.

Otherwise, (meaning they don't have the above two qualities) is it worth paying attention to? I suppose if someone is going out of their way to say not so nice things in an attempt to bring you down you may want to pay them some attention. However, most likely, it just isn't worth your time. Heathy competition is a good thing, learning from those that do something well is the only way to get better at what you do. Even as I write this it makes me want to look more towards my business plan and standards and how I can continue to grow and make Cinnamon the best it can be.

Girls Night The Musical a HUGE Success!

Wow! What a whirl wind of a week! Thursday night marked the opening night for Girls Night the Musical and what a night it was! Blackbird Communications, Cinnamon, and Push Communications teamed up to market the dynamic and funny musical that has Ottawa buzzing! Opening night was a wonderful success with a SOLD out show and over 1000 woman filling the Counterpointe Theatre's front entrance. It was INTENSE. We were so lucky to have the dynamic team from BH Photography capturing the event and we are so pleased with the results. Hang on for Monday as we will be announcing our draw winners, as one lucky winner will enjoy a free boudoir session! Check out the fill size pics here!
All the ladies enjoyed goodie bags from Sephora, delicious mini cupcakes from Little Cakes, (all in hot pink, yellow and chocolate to with our theme!) Designer Gowns from Kenlan's Closet, (The owners were all decked out in them!) Beautiful Jewels by Blend Creations... and even Smash box was there!

Our grand prize winner, Mary May - arrived in a limo courtesy of Capital Limousine and enjoyed a free dinner at Daly's Restaurant with three of her fav women! They will also enjoy a $500 g/c from Rideau Centre and a free spa package from Josephs!

We can't wait to draw our ballot box winners- so ladies be on the look out - we will be calling the four lucky winners on Monday! They will enjoy g/c from all of our wonderful vendors! Ottawa is so jammed packed full of amazing talent we feel so lucky to have worked with them all!

Bridal Show

This weekend was Ottawa's Bridal show held at the Westin. We had the pleasure of heading out and checking out all the vendors and Ottawa's fab talent. Not only were we inspired for Cinnamon's upcoming wedding, but we were so pleased to have so many clients at the show!

Allison Turner, Live Love Plan rocked the show with her candy colours and totally unique take on wedding planning. Did you notice what was around her neck!? A Blinged out USB key is what... and if you book with her, she'll give you one to help you plan your special day!

Tanya from Ibelieve Events was there too looking mighty cute with her purple and gold bad ass approach to creating the fairy tale of your dreams. She is such a warm woman, and I an absolute dream to work with. Loved her pretty display!

Ottawa Flowers showed off their new brand too! Loved their banners and new look. Was so great to see it in ACTION!

Back from holidays and trying to catch up... doesn't seem to be working! This year is going to be a big one and I wish I had of taken the time over the holidays to think about my game plan... too late for that though- we are now already IN it!

So much to look forward to this year, and very curious to what this year will bring! For Cinnamon, we had SO many ups (and a few downs) but can't wait to continue on this crazy and amazing road that is graphic design.

Things to come this year? Blackbird and Cinnamon have some little ideas brewing for the future (as always) and watch out for a fun Spring campaign that will only happen ONCE. More details to come.

So... that's all I have right now... thank you to all my FAB clients and the team that I work with everyday that make this job so absolutly fulfilling! Here's to a HUGE 2010!

KS Restaurant on the Keys

Cinnamon is pleased to be working with KS Restaurant- a hot new resto bar and lounge in South Keys. We have seen the construction site, and we must say it is going to be gorgeous. Stone textures, deep rich colours, and a very modern geometric feel.

Lessons Learned.

Wow! Last week was a crazy one full of lessons and over all business sense. As a young business owner it is always amazing what I can learn in a week. The curve can be daunting! Sometimes they are lessons that are rewarding and others... just a big pain in the arse. Even so, all of them make us better services providers as well as less naive in the long run. I often get gut feelings that I tend to ignore, and in the end kick myself for not going with my heart and head. There are a few ways to prevent the harsher lessons from knocking on your door more often then you would like.

So- how to avoid these kinds of situations...

1. Look at the history. Friends, clients, bosses, peers- it is all the same. If someone is continually feeling as though they have been let down, screwed around, hurt, ignored, etc etc. No matter how good YOUR intentions are YOU will eventually be the person that they complain about. It is just the way it goes. So, a good general rule... if a person constantly complains about others behaviors and their bad history you will eventually be a part of it in the future. Of course, sometimes people do just have had BAD luck...

2. Communicate. So often I wish I had of said something sooner. Made it clearer. Voiced my opinions. Out of not wanting to stir the pot sometimes I hold back, and it normally haunts me later. So go ahead. Say your two cents... but be weary... it might not be well received.

3. Write it down. Make sure that the agreement you share is clear by both parties. Expectations are on the table. This way, should one party not come through or ask for items outside of the agreement you can refer back to the original understanding.

4. Lean on your friends. Having a terrible week? Feeling overwhlemed? Sometimes we forget about the people who are our biggest fans. The ones that stand up for us, believe in us, and are always first to come to our side. It is easy to get caught up in the tension of it all - but we have good people in our lives for a reason.

7. Let it go. You can't make everyone happy. It is near to impossible. Some people are not going to like you or your business. That's okay. You simply can't appeal to everyone. Sigh.

6. Go with your gut. Yup... bottom line is go with what it is telling you. Have a bad feeling tha a client is going to be more of a trouble then it is worth? Not sure to spend the money? Feel like a person can't be trusted? Don't do it. A little money lost here or there... a lot of money saved when it comes to your troubles.

The Ups and Downs of being an Entrepreneur...

It has been an insanely busy month here at Cinnamon, and it always brings forth new challenges, exciting new clients, and bumps in the road.

If you're a business owner, you know how amazing it feels to wake up every morning knowing you are doing what you love the most. You are your own boss. You make the calls- and at the end of the day it's your decision whether or not you want take a day off or two.

If you're a business owner, you also know all too well, that days off come far and few between and that when you DO in fact take a day off, you will regret it for the next week in efforts to catch up. So the cycle continues. Freedom with chains. Can be pretty daunting.

So, how can we make sure we don't get swallowed up by the craziness that is owning your own business? I am no expert- but I have come a long a few tricks from either past experiences or others in my boat:

1. For every awful or discouraging email you receive (you know the ones I am talking about!)- I bet you have far more positive feedback. Just the other day, I received a harsh email that set me back a good hour and what did I do? I focused on that message all day. I didn't seem to notice that I also received three emails from clients that were light hearted, happy and full of compliments. These messages are easy to forget... and although every nasty email holds a lesson... the good ones are there for a reason.

2. Learn to say no. I am sure you have a list of services you offer your clients... a list of " yes rules"you apply to make sure your business the best it can be. Make sure you have a list of " no rules" too.

3. Get a Lawyer. When your heart tells you the verbal agreement isn't quite good enough- have it written down on paper... legally.

4. Love your accountant. A good accountant is like a cheerleader and a coach. They feel like celebrating when you have had a successful month, year etc. but they also remind you to keep things in check.

5. Leverage Social Media. Yup- get to know your competition, talk to your clients, and learn from others.

6. Avoid Social Media cliques. Expand your horizons. Talk to people you don't know... and if someone's tweets makes you feel icky.( too many, too personal, too direct, too fake etc.) Stop following them. They won't notice.

7. Don't click send. Yet. You know the emails that make you want to say things that maybe aren't the BEST reaction. Breathe. Take a moment to relax. Step away from the computer. Count to ten. Whatever. Some things need to be said. People need to know when they are out of line... but just like any message think before sending it. Are you saying it directly and professionally? Or are you jumping the gun and going to regret it later?

8. Personable... NOT personal. One of my go to girls for all things business coined this term and she is so right. A good service provider is warm and inviting. A good service provider also knows when to keep her mouth shut when it comes to anything personal. We all have stories... and some of them will bite you in the ass. Trust.

9. Inspire yourself. Some days my head is down so far into my computer screen I haven't taken a moment to look up and take in the good stuff. Every business owner needs to feel inspired. Inspired to do better, inspired to become more skilled, inspired to make more money, inspired to set yourself apart. Whatever your inspiration is... don't loose sight of it.

10. Turn your blackberry off. Same goes for your computer. Every once and awhile.
